He did not enjoy it. I would imagine that men, like women who are sexually victimized, wonder whether what happened was rape and whether they were to blame.

Rape and sexual assault can happen to anyone, including men, regardless of their race, class, age, size, appearance, or sexual orientation.

"I picked up this guy at a bar and took him home with me.

Police chief Verdi Furlanetto told The Guardian they are investigating the attack, but no arrests have been made yet.

"This is a frightening crime but it’s very common in Brazil, and violence - not only against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people but also women, black people and immigrants - is worsening," said Association in Defence of Human Rights president Lirous Ávila.

Ávila, whose organization helps victims of violence in Florianópolis, is supporting the family of the victim.

Is that sexual assault?"

Yes. Rape and sexual assault include any unwanted sexual acts. It is important to remember that cooperation does not mean consent. The victim may also fear that other members of the gay community would reject him as a traitor who brings further stigma to an already stigmatized group.

Going to the hospital can be frightening, especially after surviving a traumatic experience.

His sexuality is not the issue, and neither is his manhood. Thus, homophobia hurts victims and non-victims alike.

The Complexities of Homophobia
For victims who are gay, there are additional complexities associated with homophobia. The second is misogyny whereby males learn to have contempt for women and exhibit prejudice and discrimination against them.

They may think that because of their associations with the gay community, they deserved what happened. Also, muscles in the anus often relax when a man is raped. Remaining silent because one fears being outed complicates the recovery process. The equivalent of date rape or acquaintance rape occurs in the gay community, just as it does elsewhere.

Even if the victim identifies as LGBTQ+, same-sex rape is traumatic and does not in any way represent a desired sexual encounter.

One consequence of homophobia, ironically, is that it can be a motive for rape against someone thought to be gay or transgendered.

Even though this is an involuntary response, the rapist will claim the victim enjoyed it.
