Sandals Is Still Expecting Straight Couples

As LGBT couples are the minority at a Sandals Resort you can still expect to be asked if your spouses will be joining you when you are standing right next to them.

Once I arrived at the resort, I was escorted to the Sandals Club Lounge, offered a cold drink, and escorted to my room.

After talking with several loyal brand enthusiasts, I decided it was worth trying out. I stayed in a Caribbean Beach View Penthouse Club level room with a fantastic view of the Caribbean Sea, the resort pools, and the expansive beach.

Each Sandals property has three levels of rooms: Luxury, Club, and Butler.

While some Caribbean destinations may still have conservative attitudes, Sandals has now become a haven for LGBTQtravelers who want to enjoy a romantic getaway without fear of discrimination.

However, it’s advisable to stay within the resort areas for safety.

There are three main types of Butler rooms at the St Lucian Grande, a 1-bedroom suite, a Rondoval, and the over-water bungalow.

Overall, Sandals Resorts have made significant strides in becoming more inclusive and welcoming to the LGBT community, offering a range of activities and experiences for all guests, regardless of their relationship status or sexual orientation.

I opted for the included transfer, which was an adventure with twists and turns as we moved through the mountains.

Thiscouplesonly policy, which began in 1981, effectively barredgay and lesbiancouples from staying at their resorts.

Before this trip, I have been hesitant to try Sandals, given that the resorts are on islands that are not exactly friendly towards the LGBTQ community.

Sandals has 15 resorts on six islands, all of which have various hurdles for the community that they have not yet overcome.

The staff treats gay couples the same as other couples. The Sandals Club Lounge provides 24-hour espresso, books, board games, a place to relax with friends staying at the resort, and easy access to the concierge.

During regular operation, you’ll also be offered light snacks and your first alcoholic drink on the island. Outside of the resort, there may still be stigmas and discrimination towards the LGBTQ+ community. Once your shuttle arrives, you’ll be directed to it, and away you’ll go.

Besides access to the Sandals Club Lounge, my room included two bathrobes, room service from 7am to 10pm, and a stocked bar with full bottles of scotch, gin, vodka, rum, and wine. The year before, some US companies stopped running promotions that included stays at Sandals as prized.

Caribbean islands where Sandals Resorts are located at considered couples as a man and a women and since Sandals was a “couples only” resort, this caused issues.

As we visited every Sandals Resort we would usually see 1 or 2 gay couples at each resort. Each type of room has different options within it, so let me know what’s essential for your vacation so I can find you the perfect fit.

The LGBT Experience at Sandals

Travelers should feel comfortable at any Sandals Resort as an LGBT couple.

Sandals responded by finally opening its doors to LGBT couples.

One thing to keep in mind is Sandals was born in Jamaica as well as its founder and to this day Jamaica is not friendly to the LGBT community which had a profound effect on their policies. For example, at dinner, we saw the photographer directing a gay couple to pose in the same way they directed a straight couple.
